Humber College at IMC University of Applied Science "Master Days" 2016

Linda Jin-Troendle, Professor and Coordinator - Global Business Management Program, The Business School, Humber College shares her experience in Krems, Austria

Annually, the IMC University of Applied Science in Krems, Austria, promotes the Masters Days, a series of workshops and lectures uniting professors from all over the world. The event took place April 13-15, 2016 and one of the representatives from Canada was Linda Jin-Troendle, Professor and Coordinator - Global Business Management Program, The Business School, Humber College. Faculty and researchers from Spain, the United States,  Sweden, Finland, Singapore, France, Azerbaijan, and other countries also participated in the Masters Days.

Linda facilitated a workshop based on a case study on Volkswagen with the theme “Acting with professional integrity – what do future business leaders need to know?” After four months of preparation, she was ready to create an interactive workshop experience for 15 Krem’s Master’s students. The main theme of her session was to develop critical thinking on how future professionals can act ethically in a business environment, and how to put Social Corporate Responsibility values into practice.

This event is important for Humber, as it is a great opportunity to share Humber College’s knowledge and also learn from other professors. According to Linda, “Master Days is a global, cross-cultural event and I learned how other professors engage their students. Watching them in action was fantastic! I brought some of their knowledge back to Humber; back to my students and my classrooms.”

Linda also mentioned that Krems is very student centered and cares a lot about the learning experience, “At the end of the day it’s all about the students and how to prepare them to be global citizens. Culturally, it was wonderful to see how their culture overlaps with ours and dialogue is key to achieve that.

Humber Alumnus Shortlisted for RBC’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award

Renan Orquiza is an alumnus of Humber College, who successfully completed the Engineering Software Skills Enhancement Bridging Program (designed specifically for newcomers to Canada). Despite having arrived in Canada just 3 years ago, Renan has already made several significant contributions to the community. As a result of these contributions, Renan has been shortlisted for the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award.

Winners will be announced on June 21, 2016.

About Renan:

Philippines-born Renan Orquiza arrived in Canada on May 31, 2013, and unlike other newcomers who were struggling in adapting and landing their desired job within their professional field, he seemed to have planned things out and was able to transition his life smoothly.

He signed up with Career Edge, a non-profit organization that helps bridge internationally trained immigrants into their careers in Canada. And he was hired by a geo-environmental consulting firm based in Markham, Ontario, as an environmental project manager within four months.

While employed, he also participated in a four-month Engineering Bridging Program offered at Humber College, which helps engineering students with networking, resume preparation, interview skills, software skills, and more. He also learned that networking and volunteering were also important to your career in Canada.

With that in mind, he looked for non-profit organizations that he could help. He started volunteering at the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Mississauga Chapter as a committee member. He helped facilitate a bridge building competition for high school students and was asked to assist in other events within the PEO. In early 2015, he was elected to become one of the executive board members and is currently appointed as the environmental committee chair.

He also volunteers with Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) Authority promote their environmental programs and share information with the public about maintaining and preserving the conservation areas. Orquiza wanted to give back to the community where he and his family were living in, as well as to help conserve the environment for future generations. Because of his efforts, he received a long hours service recognition from CVC. He was also selected as the 2014 recipient of the Newcomer Gem Volunteer Award.

As a member of the grad panel and an alumni of the Engineering Software Skills Enhancement Program at Humber College, he spoke to recent candidates of the program about what his story and tips. One of his proudest accomplishments is mentoring others, which provides him with the opportunity to touch people's lives personally and to get to know others better. Even though he is mentoring others, he realizes that he, too, is learning and growing through the experience. Recently, he decided to take this passion to another level by officially becoming a mentor within the Mentoring Partnership program by the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC).

At present, he is a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.) within Ontario and working as a project manager at Watters Environmental Group Inc., an environmental consulting firm based in Vaughan, Ontario.

Summer 2016 International Students' Welcome

Summer classes have just started and the International Centre was pleased to help welcome our new international students at both campuses.

The International Centre ran sessions at North and Lakeshore to welcome our new international students (check out the photos on the International Centre’s Facebook page and a short video on our YouTube channel). The #NewHawk16 (as we call the newcomers) attended the International Students’ Welcome at North Campus on Thursday, May 5 and a special session for Global Business Management students at Lakeshore Campus on Monday, May 9.

The Welcome events were led by Matthew Keefe at North and Matthew McDonald at Lakeshore, who talked about Humber College, academic conduct, getting around campus/surrounding areas, health insurance, counselling services, and housing. They also provided a highlights on the variety of services provided to international students, such as International StudentServices, Global Opportunities, the Global Citizenship Certificate, events, trips and International Education Week. The international team also discussed possibilities of working while studying in Canada and how to apply for permits and visas. Although only a few programs start during summer, Humber College and the International Centre have prepared a calendar full of activities, workshops, trips and other events. See the all the upcoming events here.

As mentioned by Kim Smith, Associate Director of International Admissions and Student Services, “We want all the international students to feel embraced by Humber community and have a great experience while studying at Humber. The International Centre is here to help!”
