I love travelling and always thought it would be a good idea to do it as part of my academic studies. When I found out about the summer abroad opportunity offered by Humber, I knew I had to apply. I chose to go abroad to India because I’ve always been interested in visiting a place that is so vast and diverse. People have many opinions about this country, but many times those opinions are based on stereotypes; I wanted to live the experience to create my own perspective and learn from it.

One of the unique experiences I had there was when the group of exchange students and I celebrated a small version of Holi, a Hindu celebration signifying the arrival of spring. People throw coloured powder and water at one another.  In the end, it’s a beautiful canvas of people covered in many colours. This experience reminded me that the simple things that put a smile on people’s faces is what truly makes you happy. Traveling to India has made me more aware of our cultural differences and how to be more tolerant and open to other people. This trip made me learn a lot about myself and increased my desire to travel and learn about other cultures.

My two main tips before and while traveling:
1) Leave stereotypes at home and try to forget what you think you know about the country you are going to. Embrace every experience, learn from it and share the knowledge with the world after.
2) Be proud of who you are and where you came from. We are Humber’s ambassadors and when you are away from home, this is the place you're representing. Be humble, respectful and open.
